Gemology: The Basics of Mineralogy

Discover the essential foundations of mineralogy in this intensive course!

You will learn the fundamental concepts of gemology and mineralogy, which are crucial for anticipating a gemstone's behavior during cutting or setting. Key topics covered include durability, the distinction between crystalline, amorphous, and polycrystalline structures, as well as the different crystal systems. The program also explores gemstone classification—natural, synthetic, treated, artificial, or reconstituted—and presents the major gemstone families, such as diamond, corundum, quartz, beryl, and garnet.

Explore the physical properties (optical effects, luster, transparency, etc.), treatments, synthesis methods, inclusions, and color characteristics (hue, tone, and saturation)—all essential criteria that directly impact a gemstone’s value and use.

The three classes combine theory and observation. By the end of the course, participants will have acquired a basic technical vocabulary, visual analysis tools, and improved skills for evaluating gemstones.

🎓 Ideal for enthusiasts, as well as jewelers or lapidary artisans looking to deepen their understanding of gemstone materials.

📅 Three Saturdays, from September 13 to 27 – 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

The world of gemmology

Introduction to gemmology

Buying a gem goes far beyond simply choosing a color. Depending on the type of jewel and setting, several crucial parameters come into play: will your gem hold up well enough to be set in a ring, or would it be better suited to a pendant? These questions, as well as light sensitivity and the impact of inclusions on durability, will be explored in depth. This first part of the course will equip you with the knowledge you need to decipher the complex language of gemology. We'll guide you through the subtleties, giving you the essential reflexes to make informed selections.
